For a sustainable electricity supply in Europe large-scale implementation of photovoltaics (PV) in our cities and villages is a necessity. The cost reduction that is foreseen for PV makes it a competitive renewable energy source on the mid term with little impact on our physical environment, if being part of our buildings. The challenge is to make that value explicit for all stakeholders in the urban planning process. Successful implementation of PV on a large scale depends on being PV:
* Part of the planning process of building new city quarters, new houses, or renovating them
* Available as regular building product
* Attractive for the electricity sector
PV as a building product has been the subject of many projects and will not be addressed directly. In the planning process however, it is crucial that the decision makers are aware of the possibilities of PV being an electricity producing building product and that implications on an urban-scale are clear.
